Grading Services That Move Water Away From Your Home

Shaping Yards and Lots Across Northeast Georgia

Our grading services shape the ground on your property so rain runs where it should. Grading means cutting down high spots, filling low ones and setting a steady slope. Done right, it moves water away from your foundation and off your driveway. It also gives you a firm, level base for a lawn, shop or home.

Weather Tech Roofing is based in Elberton and has served this area since 2010. We grade yards, lots and building pads in Athens, Hartwell and Watkinsville. Our team also works on farms, acreage and small towns across Northeast Georgia. Our team holds a Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission certification. Keeping soil in place is part of how we grade.

What Our Land Grading Work Covers

Every grading job starts with where the water needs to go. We set the high and low points, then cut and fill soil to match. Grading in Northeast Georgia means working with dense red clay that sheds rain fast. We finish with a smooth surface ready for topsoil, sod, seed or gravel.

Why Yard Grading Pays Off and How the Work Is Done

Water Flows Away From the Foundation

Home building codes ask for a 6-inch drop in the first 10 feet from a house. We shape that kind of fall so rain heads away from your walls. Less water at the foundation can mean a drier crawl space and healthier beds. Our team at Weather Tech Roofing sets this slope on yards, lots and pads.

Checking the Slope Before Topsoil Goes On

The slope gets checked as the work moves along, then again before the final layer. Low spots are much easier to fix in bare dirt than under new sod. On larger lots, the ground is often shaped in sections, with each area draining to a safe spot.

Give Fresh Grade Time to Settle

New grade settles a little after the first few hard rains. Cover bare ground with seed, sod or straw soon. Fill any low spots that hold water.

Lot Grading for Homes, Farms and Commercial Sites

Many grading jobs start with a puddle that never dries or water under the house. Regrading the yard gives that water a clear path off the property. New construction needs a level building pad and a driveway that drains. On farms and acreage, grading smooths rutted roads, fills washouts and evens out low spots.

Steep lots take more planning than flat ones. On a hillside, we often cut into the high side. That soil then builds up the low side. A slope too steep to hold may also need a retaining wall or erosion control. Soggy clay also changes timing, since heavy machines rut wet ground.

  • Backyards where rain pools against the house or patio
  • New home lots that need a pad and driveway shaped
  • Gravel farm roads with ruts, washouts and standing puddles
  • Commercial lots that need even ground for parking or storage

When does a yard need regrading instead of a little fill dirt?

A yard needs regrading when water runs toward the house or pools across a wide area. A little fill dirt only fixes a small, single low spot.

Can grading fix water pooling in my yard?

Yes, in many yards regrading gives standing water a path to run off. Where a low spot cannot drain across the surface, a drainage channel may be needed too.

Can grading keep water out of my crawl space?

Grading helps by turning the ground so rain runs away from the foundation. Gutters and downspouts should also empty well away from the walls.

What happens to the topsoil during a grading job?

Topsoil is usually pushed aside and saved before the main grading starts. Once the clay is shaped, it goes back on top for the grass.

How long does it take to grade a yard?

Time depends on the size of the yard, how much soil moves and the weather. A small backyard fix goes much faster than reshaping a full lot.
